MA IN DESIGN
OBJECTIVES
The MA in Design provides the practical qualifications and knowledge of methods and theory necessary for practicing design at an advanced level – aesthetically, ethically, and effectively. Primarily in the form of a larger, independent, experimental project, students learn new ways of thinking – also across accustomeddisciplinary borders – in order to develop their subject areas. Based on an extensive and thorough understanding of design as problem solving, MA students cultivate a facility for comprehensive thinking and for handling complex problems. The development of strategic and conceptual competence prepares students for independent practice and establishes a foundation for working with larger projects. Students gain experience in presenting their own projects – in writing, orally, and through exhibitions. Relevant theory bolsters students’ faculties for critical reflection on their own design production. A crucial starting point for meeting the needs and challenges of the future is an understanding of the role design can play in a society in flux. A vital component of the study is academic conversation and discourse – between students themselves and with the academic staff. Accordingly, compulsory academic meetings are a regular feature of the programme. The MA in Design completes a professional education in design. The MA degree qualifies for application to the National Fellowship Programme for Artistic Development as well as to doctoral studies in design.
INTERNSHIPS
Students have the possibility of devoting periods of their study time to the acquisition of specific knowledgeand experience through internships at various design offices and companies. Normally the students themselves will need to contact and make arrangements with internship prospects, but the main tutor, the Study Administration may also provide assistance. Internships are best included in the second and third semesters, and must be approved of in advance by each student’s main tutor.Approved exchange periods are equivalent to the Study Plan for the period in question, and are taken into account in the calculation of attendance. Semester assessments will be conducted as normal unless alternative arrangements have been approved in advance by the Dean.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The MA in Design is based upon a BA in Design or other relevant education corresponding to 180 study credits. Applicants are assessed on the basis of their application, project description, documentation of relevant design production (portfolio), and an interview.
