Masters in Biology in NORWAY

Master’s Programme in Biology-Microbiology/ plant biology/ Botanical Biodiversity/ Cell and Developmental Biology/ Applied Physiology/ Biochemistry and Physiology

Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms: viruses, bacteria, fungi, single-cell algae and protozoa. Fundamental to the course is the study of the microorganisms' own qualities and their functions in different environments. ; The course ranges from basic research to the use of microorganisms in practical and commercial applications. The subjects also have social applications. The goal of the master program is to give an insight into the subject through theory, experiments and other relevant work, so that you get a complete understanding of the life of microorganisms. The microbiology masters program will enable you to enter into a wide range of positions where microbiology is relevant

Formal prerequisites

a) Completed an undergraduate study of at least three years (B.Sc.) from an approved institution of higher educationb) Competence in biology corresponding to 60 ECTS (1 year) of introductory biology. c) English proficiency must be documented according to specified requirements.

Master in Biology - plant biology

Duration

2 years

Programme description

Department’s research in experimental plant biology consists of molecular biology, biochemistry, and eco-physiology/ environmental biology. Research programs address the problem of growth and development of plants in general and their responses to the climatic factors such light and temperature and stress due to grazing in particular. Research skills in these areas are relevant to agriculture, forestry and horticulture because stress due to unfavourable climatic conditions is a major limiting factor for production. In this area of masters program the student can examine how plant development and genes and other cellular components (such as phytochromes and hormones) are controlled and regulated by various environmental variables. ; This area will be strongly oriented towards molecular biology and biotechnology but it is also possible to set up individual study program in classic developmental physiology or eco-physiology

Formal prerequisites

At least 3 years of higher education with a major within the subject applied for is required.; English language proficiency required

Master in Biology - Botanical Biodiversity

Duration

2 years

Programme description

This area is directed towards students who want to study biodiversity of plants. Studies can be conducted at the subspecies levels, focussing on genetic variation within species, species immigration history and population structure. Also taxonomical studies at the species level can be performed for instance on lichen and fungi species. Spatial and temporal patterns of biodiversity may be studied both at the species and the community level. Biodiversity of plant communities are studied focussing on species composition and spatial mixture and pattern of communities in the landscape

Formal prerequisites

At least 3 years of higher education with a major within the subject applied for is required.; English language proficiency required.

Master’s Programme in Biology - Cell and Developmental Biology

Duration

2 years

Programme description

The aim of the program is to give you an insight and overview of the subject areas of cell and developmental biology based on a physiological and anatomical approach. During the program you will, among other things, develop a sound knowledge in the use of cell biology methods that can also be used in all areas of experimental biology. The course group has access to good laboratory equipment and stress the importance of closely following the students' progress. The independent thesis will be associated with an ongoing research project, and cover a broad perspective from basic research to specific practical projects. Through the program you will gain knowledge in how to carry out an independent scientific study

Master’s Programme in Biology – Applied Physiology

Duration

2 years

Programme description

The Department of Biology has particularly high competence within fish physiology but you will also be able to work in topics related to medicine, aquaculture, and others. ; A master's programme in biology consists of an individual research project (master's thesis) of 60 ECTS, and courses or special topics of 60 ECTS. Some of the courses are compulsory within the specialisations. The master's thesis will often include an experiment. When working with the master's thesis, you will, in an independent way, make use of methods and scientific techniques from the course in the research of a relevant material. The master's thesis can be based on your own field work and /or available data, or it can be of a more theoretical or experimental nature.

Formal prerequisites

a) Completed a first-degree study of at least three years (B.Sc.) from an approved institution of higher education, or an equivalent background accepted by the University of Bergen.
b) Competence in biology corresponding to 20 credit points (1 year) of introductory biology.
c) English proficiency must be documented according to specified requirements.
